Photoaging also known as Dermatoheliosis is a term used to describe changes induced by repeated exposure to the sun’s harmful rays. Although most people love the warmth and light of the sun, too much sun exposure can significantly damage and speed the aging process, as it affects the ability of the skin to repair itself. Keep in mind that sun exposure that results in a tan is indicative of sun damaged skin. There is no such thing as a safe tan.
Other risk factors are having fair skin and tanning beds. Sunbathing and tanning beds can put you at risk for serious medical problems. Damage to the skin can present itself as abnormal discolouration (red/brown blotchiness), fine to coarse wrinkles, yellow thickening of the skin, called solar elastosis, spider veins and even skin cancer.
After a long winter we all look forward to the summer and its wonderful warmth. We can still enjoy our activities and time outside, but be proactive and aware.
In order to prevent damage, minimize your exposure to UV rays and protect yourself with shade, clothing and a good “broad spectrum” sun bloc that is SPF 30 or higher.
